Tourist night life

Night life as it is understood in the West appeared on Bali only when foreign visitors began to flock to the island, and it is still confined to the main tourist areas. The island's principle entertainment centre, with bars, discos and other attractions, is Kuta Beach, which has now joined up with the neighbouring township of Legian. All the large hotels in Nusa Dua, have their own night spots. In Sanur night life is on a relatively modest scale, and there too it is centered on the hotels.

The centre of night life in Kuta/Legian is the area bounded by Jalan Pantai Kuta and Jalan Legian. In this quarter are numerous "in" places (e.g. Goa, Sari Club), mainly patronised by the younger set. Many bars, such as Jaya pub and Café Luna have live music. There are numerous discos, some of them charging admission or requiring a minimum expenditure on drinks.

The Strand bar (under German management) in Jalan Double Six has become an artists' rendezvous, with temporary exhibitions of work by both Balinese and visiting artists.

There is only one youth bar in Ubud, Monkey forest club.
