Transport in Bali

Bemo and bus

There are continously buses and bemo's driving along the main roads. It is a real adventure to use these bemo's and share the seats with the locals. Don't be surprised to find chicken and even pigs between the passengers. Bemo's are small pick-up trucks with seats in the loading platform. For very long journeys, mini-buses are preferred as the seats are more comfortable.

There are no fixed prices. Although it is recommended to negotiate the price with the driver, they already start driving before any price has been fixed. In that case, carefully check the price the locals are paying. Keep the same amount of money ready when leaving the bus. Don't expect to get any change if you don't have the exact amount ready.

Rent-a-car

An international driving licence is required when driving a motorbike or a car in Bali. It is also possible to acquire a temporary driving license at the police station in Denpasar (Jalan Raya Kuta). Note that this option is more cumbersome as you will need to go to Denpasar and lose half a day just for paperwork on the drive license.

The driver must be at least 21 years of age.

Most rent-a-car companies are located in Kuta, Denpasar, Sanur and Ubud. They rent small Suzuki jeeps with prices starting from 80.000 IDR with a small insurance. It is recommended to make a test tour with the car, check the lights and breaks. Fuel price ranges between 1200 and 1500 IDR.

You must be prepared to cope with unfamiliar driving conditions and with the sometimes anarchic driving methods. If you feel uncomfortable driving in these conditions, it is not recommended to rent a car.

Note that cars drive on the left side in Bali and in most asian countries.

Mortorcycles

Small semi-automatic motorbikes are available for 35.000 IDR a day. Again, an international driving licence is required. Be cautious, as even experienced drivers consider driving in Bali dangerous. A motorbike is perfect to visit small isolated villages.

It is not recommended to rent heavy motorbikes.

Taxis

There are very few taxis out of the tourist areas. Kuta, Denpasar, Nusa Dua, and Ubud however, have plenty of taxi's. The blue taxis are metered, the others are not. Negotiate the price before entering a taxi if they have no meter.

Push bikes

This can be real fun. Prices range between 6.000 IDR to 9.000 IDR a day. Unfortunately, the warm temperature makes push biking very uncomfortable.
